Laugarstovo

Laugarstovo in Ulvik is a work of adaptive reuse: bringing the protected Prestakaien boathouse back into use as a publicly accessible sauna. The project won the 2025 Sustainability Award at the Norwegian Sauna Conference. The approach is deliberately double, combining heritage conservation with social use. We hold on to the cultural integrity of the building while making it an inclusive meeting place for the village. The boathouse is a classic grindbygg, listed in the Sefrak register, and once belonged to the vicarage. We respected its protected status with a reversible structure in cross-laminated timber, so the whole intervention can be removed again without lasting marks on the historic fabric.
