Heipiplerka

In the summer of 2025 we were commissioned to develop an eight-person sauna for Oslo Badstuforening at Sukkerbiten. The design is dimensioned for the best possible löyly, with a raised floor in the hot room so that the seating sits above the stove and close to the rising heat. The benches run parallel to open up contact between the people sitting there. The stove is fed from outside, which cuts heat loss when adding wood and keeps the air inside cleaner. The building is compact and inward-looking, with limited glazing for controlled light and low energy loss. The facade is Norwegian pine from Bø in Telemark, which will age to an even silver-grey patina. The curved aluminium roof was chosen for easy run-off and maintenance, but plays a withdrawn part in the expression. Together the principles of heat, ventilation and material use give a sober sauna that puts heat flow, function and sound operating practice first.
