Bjørkheim Sauna is where our journey began, and the ground the practice is built on. It was through this project that the idea of sustainable, publicly useful meeting places took shape. Rather than take the easy route with prefabricated modules, we designed and built the sauna from the ground up, for durability and quality. Robust timber and weather-resistant materials equip it for the harsh climate of western Norway. At the same time we developed our own lock and booking system, so the sauna could be self-service and open to everyone. We wanted Bjørkheim to be an informal meeting place people could come and go from as they pleased, and it mattered especially that the threshold stayed low for older people and for those who struggle with digital technology.
